Berlin Video Music Awards

I moved to Berlin in the Spring of 2016 and I remember as a new comer to see posters from the Berlin Music Video Awards all around the city; and although I’ve never heard about them before, I was very curious to see more of it. However 3 years passed away and never found the time nor the will to assist to the festival. So when Lomography asked me if I wanted to go to this year BMVA festival I didn’t hesitate and decided to bring my cameras along with me.

What I found behind the doors of the Gretchen club was not what I thought I will find for the last 3 years. This is not your typical red carpet award ceremony, there are no big media or paparazzi involved, people don’t come with tuxedos and Dolce & Gabbana dresses, instead is more of a Berlin typical techno club scene: a Drag Queen DJ playing in the back of a huge inflatable pool, girls, boys and transgender drinking mate and cinnamon whiskey by the pool, models, actress  and dancers dressed on high hills and wearing military or pink fashion and long blond wigs. I mean, what were the chances that I was gonna feel more like inside Berghain club than in an award ceremony?

However everything made more sense when the ceremony started, before the final videos were presented a handful of local fashion designers took the improvised runway and presented their new design, fashion for Berlin party clubs, for Barghain and Kit Kat, dresses ready to wear on the streets of the Berlin while the Love Parade takes over the city again.

After the Fashion parade was over it was time for the selected music videos to be presented, the categories were as genius as funny and the videos where as incredible as the life in Berlin. The most trashy video, the best low budget and the best experimental were announced next to the best song, the best director, the best cinematography… etc. A competition of weird videos that was won by The Chemical Brothers and a Formula 1 dog driver (yes a dog!).

When the night ended I felt sorry for I never had been to this festival before, but at the same time very happy for my films were full with unexpected photos and my head full of inspiration after watching all kind of videos from all around the globe. Next year I will not think twice.
